Living at Findhorn Sean has an detailed knowledge of when and where to see wildlife throughout the seasons.
What you may see
Spring and Summer
A wide variety of breeding birds can be seen and heard – from arctic and sandwich terns, to yellow hammers and sand martins. Early in the season you will be helped to gain confidence in identifying birds by song. From mid-summer there is a chance of watching fishing ospreys.
We are likely to come across insects such as the the common hawker dragonfly, dark green fritillary and common blue butterfly. We might be lucky enough to encounter a tiger beetle. We will look at flowering plants, including the unusual and uncommon creeping ladies tresses and some edible and medicinal plants.
Whenever we can, we will take time to watch grazing roe deer and in the woodland there is always the chance of seeing a red squirrel.
Autumn and winter
From the beach we will search for sea duck, including eider, common and velvet scoter and long-tailed duck. If we are very lucky we might see a red-throated diver or a Slavonian Grebe – or even a Great Northern, or black-throated diver.
On Findhorn Bay we will learn how to identify wading birds such as the bar-tailed godwit, golden plover and redshank. You may like to return to the Bay early evening for a spectacular dusk goose roost watch.
Walking in the woods gives us an opportunity to become familiar with mixed flocks of small birds, including goldcrest and tree creeper. We might see a red squirrel. If we are very lucky we might encounter or a crested tit, or a flock of crossbills. In the autumn we will keep our eyes open for wild mushrooms.
